Frequently asked

Good questions,

answered plainly.

What clients ask us before they engage — about working together, tax, audits, and what it costs.

Working Together

How the relationship runs day to day, and who you actually deal with.

Do you work with clients outside New York?

Yes. We’re based in New York and serve clients across the U.S. and internationally, including multi-state and cross-border filings.

A licensed CPA — not an intake coordinator. The person who plans your return is the person who signs it.

Routinely. Tax decisions rarely sit in isolation, and we would rather be in the conversation than corrected after it.

More than once a season. Planning happens throughout the year, with a check-in before any major transaction and again before year end.

That is fine, and often ideal. We work alongside them, review the output, and handle the tax and assurance layer on top.

Tax planning & compliance

What we plan, what we file, and how we handle it when an agency writes to you.

What is the difference between tax planning and tax preparation?

Preparation reports what already happened. Planning changes what happens — entity choice, compensation, timing, and elections, decided before the year closes.

Yes, and we prefer to. Planning one without the other is how deductions and elections get missed.

Yes. We respond to notices, represent clients in audits, and handle appeals — including for returns we did not prepare.

Yes. SALT, nexus, residency, FBAR, Form 5471, GILTI, and expat filings are practice areas for us, not exceptions.

Bring it in. Some of it will be sound, and some will not survive an audit. We will tell you which parts are which.

Audits & assurance

When a report is required, who can issue it, and what the process looks like.

How do I know whether I need an audit, a review, or a compilation?

It depends on who is asking — a lender, an investor, a regulator, or your own bylaws. We read the requirement and tell you the least burdensome option that satisfies it.

Yes. We are a registered New York State CPA firm enrolled in peer review, which is what makes a report valid.

Yes. Employee benefit plan audits are a specialty practice for us, prepared to Department of Labor standards and attached to your Form 5500.

For most private companies, yes. Independence rules restrict certain combinations, and we will tell you plainly if yours is one of them.

Typically four to eight weeks from the time records are complete, and we schedule backward from your filing or board deadline.

How We Work

No Hourly Surprises.

Engagements are scoped and priced up front, so the bill is never the part you have to think about.

A fixed annual engagement

Priced by scope, not by the hour, and agreed in writing before any work begins.

Calls are never billed

Ask before a decision, not after one. Questions during the year are part of the engagement.

One conversation, then a proposal

We learn your situation first, then send scope and fee in writing. No obligation either way.

A CPA, start to finish

The person who plans your return is the person who signs it — no handoffs to junior staff.

Fees & onboarding

What it costs, how billing works, and how to start.

How are engagements priced?

By scope, not by the hour. After an initial conversation we propose a fixed annual engagement, so you always know what to expect.

No. Ongoing questions are part of the engagement. We would rather you call before a decision than after one.

A short call to understand your situation, then a written proposal with scope and fee. If you engage us, onboarding takes about two weeks.

Prior-year returns, current financials, and entity documents. We will send a specific list rather than a generic questionnaire.

Yes. Most clients switch mid-year, and we coordinate the handoff with your prior accountant.

Still have a question?

Ask it directly. A short conversation is usually faster than reading another page.
